The LS1216L will crosscut boards up to 15" wide at 90°, right out of the box with no special setup required. It has an innovative direct drive gearbox and patented retractable guard system engineered for increased vertical cutting capacity and the largest crown molding cutting capacity (8" vertically nested) in its class. The patented retractable rear guard also provides 6-1/2" baseboard cutting capacity (vertical). The saw also has a patented 4-Steel Rail Sliding System that further increases rigidity to produce superior cuts, as the four steel rails provide less deflection. Precise Miter and Bevel Cuts
The LS1216L has an exclusive 5-1/2" tall sliding fence system, with four sliding fences featuring upper and lower fence adjustments for more precise miter and bevel cuts to accommodate a variety of cutting applications. The saw miters 0° to 52° left and 0° to 60° right, with positive stops at 0°, 15°, 22.5°, 31.6°, and 45° (left and right). The dual rear-handle bevel lock is easily accessible with adjustments 0° to 45° (left and right), with positive stops at 0°, 22.5°, 33.9°, and 45° (left and right). Precision adjustments are made easier with dual front bevel scales for improved visibility. The easy one-touch (push in and turn) miter lock system is designed for accurate adjustments and increased efficiency. Best designed miter saw : Makita LS1216LX 12-Inch Dual Slide Compound Miter Saw with Laser and Stand

Makita 12 inch compound miter saw is great. The stand is also good. My only complaint: the seller shipped both the saw and stand separately by Fed Ex. The first time the stand was shipped, it apparently was dropped from a conveyor belt or loading dock and bent so that it could not be assembled (the cardboad box could have been sturdier; it was mangled). Both the saw and stand had to be returned (Fed Ex picked them up) after getting an RMA. Seller immediately shipped replacements which came a week later. This time the nuts and bolts for the stand were scattered loose in the large cardboard box and 80% were missing. Rather than deal with more incompetent packagers/shippers, I went to the local hardware store and with some difficulty located metric measure Allen bolts - cost: about $20.00. I then assembled the stand and mounted the saw on it and have used both with no further problems. WFM

Let's face it, if you're looking at this saw you want to save some money. That's why I bought this saw (actually its predecessor) six years ago for $24 at HD. Simply put, I beat the pi$$ out of this thing. I never tossed it around or threw it in the mud, but I used the heck out of it. I built 15 decks out of pressure treated 2x lumber, 2x6 deck boards and many 4x4 posts. Wet and dry wood, sometimes in the rain, this thing never missed a beat. The shoe will move on you a little bit and the 0 degree bevel setting isn't quite 0, but what do you expect for $30? Expect to cut through anything you got for years to come because this ugly dog just won't die. Damn, I want a new saw but this thing keeps going. Good, basic tool. Well worth the money.

The 15-amp motor powers you through 8/4 oak like butter. Cutting crown molding vertically is no chore here, with a large extended fence that goes up to 4 inches. Even the table surface is bigger on this saw. It's not a perfect world, especially at the corners, but your miters can be perfect with 0 to 52-degree range both left and right to compensate. The detents at all the common angles are easy to manipulate, too. The gauges for both the miter and bevel cuts are clear and easy to read, something you don't find on every saw. The swivel is smooth and the blade travel is beautiful. Yet this Hitachi stands out from the others for two more great features: weight and laser-line accuracy. You've hefted enough tools out of the back of the pickup to appreciate this: For all its power, it weighs only 27 pounds, an impressive accomplishment for Hitachi. After about a year of usage I think I can post a usefull review. As others have said, a dual laser would be useful, but honestly, once you get the hang of it, a single laser is really not that much of a handicap. I have put built-up crown in 3 rooms + 1 hall now, baseboards in 4 rooms, chair rail in 2 rooms and 2 hallways, chair rail up stairs (probably over 200-250 linear feet of chair), and 3 rooms + 1 hallway + 1 stair way in wall frames. All of this was used with this saw and the only thing that did not work perfectly was my poor measuring. Add to that, my neighbor borrowed my saw and put in chair and base board in two of his rooms as well. Now I am building some cabinets and am using this to cut exact lengths for my face frames. I recommend this w/o reservation for a great beginner's - Intermediate saw (I now consider myself an intermediate). It has a good amount of power and spins a decent finish blad fast enough to put a razor sharp edge on MDF molding. (NICE). I am giving the saw 5 stars for the dollar-performance ratio as it does a TON for how much it costs. Negatives: - The Bevel scale is a sticker and mine is beginning to come off. - After a years worth of usage, the miter angle was getting a little tight. It seems that the fine dust was getting into the cracks and was binding up. I took it apart and cleaned it out in about 15-20 minutes. Lubed it up with Silicone and worked like new. I tried blowing it out with compressed air, but no dice. I assume this is an issue with all saws of this sort, but have nothing to compare it to since this is my first compound miter. - Singe laser... said before, but for the beginner, knowing where both kerfs are is a big help. - No saftey. Actually I really LIKE this feature. I don't like setting up my cut only to have to fumble with a safety switch. Some may think the lack of a saftey is bad, I think it is just fine. Overall great purchase. This thing has paid for itself after the first project, now as I see it, I am making money off this thing! Buy it, you won't regret it.

Ridgid MS1290LZA 28523 Saw, 12-Inch Compound Sliding Miter with Laser

I bought one of these saws when it was first introduced and have used it in my shop for over a year, on dozens of jobs. It sits on a home-made stand.

Pros:

- The 1 3/16" diameter [sliding] rails are strong and stiff, so there is minimal blade deflection. See for yourself: compare this saw with comparable saws at Home Depot. Pull the handle all the way forward and down on any slider and move the handle repeatedly from left to right. You'll notice the blade barely moves from side to side on the Ridgid. Try this on sliders with 1" rails, (such as the DeWalt DW718) and the blade deflects side to side by as much as 1/4"; which would seriously compromise cutting accuracy. This test convinced me to only consider saws with 1 3/6" rails.

- Highly accurate cuts are the norm. E.g., it can shave 1/100" off a board or adjust in parts of a degree. The bevel and miter scale were adjusted perfectly to zero from the factory.

- The largest table of all sliders; excellent support for the piece you're cutting.

- 61 degree miter left or right, and 50 degree bevel left or right, is the best in the industry. Large handle on the miter gage is easy to set or move; stainless steel miter degree indicator has large numbers and � degree lines. Bevel angle is easy to adjust and lock in place.

- The included clamp is easy to tighten down on a board, or loosen, and fits on either side of the blade. Great safety feature when cutting small pieces, as it keeps your fingers away from the blade. Clamps are available as a "part", if you want a second one.

- All controls are accessible from the front of the saw, which helps makes it a great shop saw. Handle is designed for a right-handed person; you have to depress a safety button with your thumb, before the large on/off bar switch can be pulled in.

- Tool-free depth gage is easy to set; stays set until you release it and it works well.

- Very high fence (5.5") provides support for high crown or base molding, or other pieces. The fence top sections on both sides are adjustable from side to side, or they can be removed altogether.

- Powerful (15-amp) motor doesn't bog down.

- Includes a laser blade guide that mounts on the arbor. (Although a built-in adjustable laser would have been better.) Blade stops almost instantly when the on/off bar switch is released.

- 3.5" depth of cut with 13.5" crosscut capacity means you can cut a 4x4 or 2x12 in one pass.

- Polycarbonate blade guard works flawlessly and never gets in the way. Easy to hold the blade guard up with your right thumb, while gripping the handle, to pinpoint blade positioning.

- Warranty is the best in the industry.

Cons:

- Heavy at 68 lbs., and bulky; might need two people to lift into the bed of a truck. However, this isn't an issue if it's used as a shop saw and it's on a stand.

- Dust pickup is awful. I keep a 2.5" vacuum hose connected to the where the dust bag usually connects, and use two other dust pickup hoses near the table. Even though it's connected to a 3 HP dust collector, I doubt if half the dust is caught. After a big project, there is a lot of cleaning up to do, and while using the saw, I turn on an exhaust fan and wear a respirator.

Other:

- The early models of this saw came with a very thin kerf carbide blade that had a tendency to oscillate so badly it needed a blade stabilizer. Reviews of later editions of this saw don't mention that issue, so Ridgid must include a better blade now.

Summary:

Fine Woodworking's 2010 Tool Guide proclaims this model a best value and "ideal for use in a shop". Having used it in my shop for over a year now, I'd have to agree.

If this saw had decent dust pickup, I would have rated it at 5 stars.
